Newcastle Former Boss Kinnear Dies at 77

LONDON:  Former manager of Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, Joe Kinnear has passed away at the age 77, said his family on Sunday.

Irish defender Kinnear, started his career from Tottenham in the 1960s and 70s. He won several trophies for Tottenham before becoming the manager for a number of Premier League teams.

A statement by his family said that Joe passed away peacefully this afternoon in the presence of his family members.

AFC Wimbledon has termed Kinnear as a true legend of the club.  Kinneaafter had a seven-year spell with the Dons and also won the LMA Manager of the Year award in 1994.

The League Two club in a post on X, said it was deeply saddened about passing of its former manager, Joe Kinnear. The post said the club had amazing memories of joe.

Kinnear started his coaching career in Asia, working in Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, before spells with Nepal and India.

He came back to England to become Dave Mackay’s assistant and was later named Wimbledon boss in 1992. Kinnear helped Wimbledon to reach the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup in 1997.

However, he suffered a heart attack during a league game against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999. He later returned as director of football at Oxford before and also took a similar role at Luton.

He took the Forest job in 2004 and in 2008 replaced Kevin Keegan at Newcastle.

Kinnear was diagnosed with dementia in 2015.
