CAIRNS, Australia: As Tropical Cyclone Jasper steadily advances across the Coral Sea, the northeastern Australian cities of Cairns and Port Douglas brace themselves for the impending impact.

The Category One storm is anticipated to make landfall on Australia’s eastern coast around midday Wednesday (2300 GMT Tuesday), bringing along “destructive” winds and the potential for flooding.

Cairns and Port Douglas, renowned tourist hubs serving as gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, find themselves directly in the storm’s projected path. Meteorologists predict that Jasper will intensify to a Category Two storm, delivering winds reaching 140 kilometers (87 miles) per hour, accompanied by heavy rainfall and the possibility of storm tides.

Miriam Bradbury from Australia’s state Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning regarding the potential for “destructive” gusts. Winds of this magnitude have the capability to bring down tree limbs, entire trees, or power lines, posing a significant threat to the region. Authorities advise residents to secure loose items and take precautions against potential damage to fences, roofs, and other properties.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, flood watches have been issued for rivers throughout the region. As Tropical Cyclone Jasper approaches, residents are urged to stay informed about the latest updates and follow safety guidelines provided by local authorities.

The situation remains dynamic, and residents are encouraged to adhere to official instructions, prioritize safety measures, and take proactive steps to minimize the potential impact of the impending cyclone. Local emergency services are on standby, ready to respond to any challenges posed by the approaching storm.
