Officials Say 42 Looters Arrested in Quake-hit Areas of Turkiye

ANKARA: Police officials have said that they have arrested at least 42 accused on suspicion of looting in quake-hit city Hatay in Turkey. Monday’s tremor struck Syria and Turkiye killing around more than 26,000 people and destroying thousands of businesses and homes.

Reports suggest that looters are exploiting the tragedy in Turkiye, taking everything they can find, including mobile phones.

Police Officials

Police officials said that they have recovered money, smartphones, bank cards, computers, arms and jewelry from the processions of suspects.

However, some people, distressed for food items broke into markets following aid did not reach immediately.

Reports said that at least four ATMs were slashed from the front and squashed.

Several videos have uploaded on social media, allegedly showing looters beaten up.

Hatay resident Aylin Kabasakal said that they are guarding their homes, cars and the looters are plundering their homes. He said that there is nothing left to express, unfortunately as they are destroyed and shaken. She termed it a nightmare. She asked that the law enforcing agencies must protect their homes.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday said the state of emergency meant that people involved in looting should know that the state will bring them into justice,
