JEDDAH: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), in collaboration with Egypt, hosted a virtual workshop titled “Promoting Welfare and Integration of Persons with Disabilities” on Monday. The event, organized on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed on December 3 each year, aimed to foster an exchange of experiences and knowledge among OIC Member States.

Dr. Amina Al-Hajri, Director General of Cultural, Social, and Family Affairs, delivered the OIC General Secretariat’s speech during the workshop. She emphasized that the event was part of the ongoing efforts to follow up on resolutions from the 2nd Ministerial Conference on Social Development. The workshop focused on reviewing the OIC’s policies regarding the welfare and integration of persons with disabilities, including the draft OIC Plan of Action for this segment.

Collaboration for Welfare of Persons with Disabilities

Dr. Al-Hajri highlighted the collaborative work between the OIC and its institutions, specifically mentioning the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC). Together, they developed the OIC policy on social protection, encompassing special needs and disabilities. This policy provides strategies and guidelines for Member States to improve conditions for persons with disabilities.

The workshop served as a platform for Member States to share their efforts and achievements in enhancing conditions for persons with disabilities. SESRIC played a crucial role in this endeavor by presenting a visual overview of the plan of action associated with OIC policies. The discussions during the workshop aimed to facilitate the exchange of experiences among Member States, fostering collaboration to better the conditions of persons with disabilities and promote justice and equality.
