NEW DELHI: The social media chief of India’s opposition Congress party has been apprehended amid elections in the country. Police confirmed the arrest and said that the social media chief arrested over accusations he doctored a widely shared video during the current elections in the country.

Arun Reddy was arrested late Friday in connection with the videos about Amit Shah vowing in a campaign speech to end affirmative action policies for millions of low-caste Indians. He is often referred to as the second-most powerful person in India after extremist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and they have been close political allies dating back several decades.

Reddy “was captured yesterday on probe about… a video of the Home Minister”, deputy commissioner of Delhi police Hemant Tiwari confirmed. The police official said that they produced the accused in the court and now he is in police custody.

Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed also confirmed Reddy’s arrest but rejected he was responsible for publishing the clip. She said that Arun Reddy was not involved in any doctored video and they are supporting him.
