ARMAGH: Outgoing Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed confidence in the stability of Northern Ireland’s newly-formed government during a visit to the region on Monday, despite recent political upheavals.

Varadkar’s visit to Armagh came amidst the aftermath of Jeffrey Donaldson’s resignation from the leadership of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Northern Ireland’s largest unionist party. Donaldson stepped down following charges of historical sex offences, which he vehemently denies.

Addressing reporters after a meeting with cabinet ministers from the Irish government and members of Northern Ireland’s executive, Varadkar emphasized the resilience of political institutions in the face of challenges. He underscored the importance of ensuring that institutions continue to function and withstand disruptions, highlighting the region’s history of navigating political turmoil.

Varadkar’s visit to Northern Ireland marked his final official engagement as Irish prime minister, following his recent announcement of resignation from both the premiership and leadership of the Fine Gael party. His departure comes at a crucial moment for Northern Ireland, with the recent restoration of power-sharing in Belfast after a two-year hiatus.

The reinstatement of power-sharing saw Michelle O’Neill of Sinn Fein make history as Northern Ireland’s first pro-Irish nationalist leader. The development followed the resolution of a DUP boycott initiated in protest against post-Brexit trade arrangements for Northern Ireland.

Despite recent political turbulence, O’Neill affirmed that the Northern Ireland Executive remains committed to its duties, emphasizing that it is “business as usual.”
