KABUL: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has highlighted a dire situation, with a staggering 23.7 million people, urgently need humanitarian assistance in 2024. Despite a decrease in violence, Afghanistan still faces significant humanitarian challenges, as underscored by UNAMA recently, local media reported.

Of those in need, 5.9 million are women and 5.4 million are men, as stated by the UN agency. Similarly, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have also expressed grave concerns about the worsening humanitarian conditions in Afghanistan.

Decades of conflict, poverty, recurring disasters, and economic downturns have left millions of Afghans in dire circumstances. Since the Taliban took control in August 2021, the situation has worsened due to political transitions, economic contractions, and reduced international aid, leading to an exacerbation of the humanitarian crisis. Recent events such as floods and earthquakes have further highlighted the urgent need for humanitarian assistance.

On May 1, approximately 2,800 Afghan migrants returned from Iran, according to TOLO news, citing the Taliban’s Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has described the human rights situation in Afghanistan, particularly for women, girls, religious and ethnic minorities, as dire, emphasizing the critical need for humanitarian aid for the 23.7 million people affected in the war hit country.
