Over 97% of Minors Use Internet in China: National Survey

BEIJING: The number of juvenile internet users in China reached 193 million in 2022, according to the 5th edition of the national survey on internet usage among minors. The internet penetration rate of juveniles went up from 93.7% to 97.2% during 2018 to 2022, according to the report.

The trend of children using the internet is obvious, with the internet penetration rate of primary school students increasing from 89.5% to 95.1% during the past five years.

The gap between urban and rural juveniles’ internet penetration rate continues to drop from 5.4 percentage points in 2018 to One percentage point in 2022.

About 90% of minors have their own internet-connected devices and mainly use mobile phones to surf the internet.

Moreover, over 20% of juveniles are using new smart devices such as smart lamps, smart watches, smart dictionaries, and other smart screens.

Online learning, listening to music, watching short videos, playing games, and chatting are the main activities of children surfing the internet.

Internet’s Impact on Children’s Learning

The proportion of juveniles who believe that the internet has a positive impact on their learning has gone up from 53% in 2018 to 77.4% in 2022.

As the management system of online entertainment is constantly improving, 61.5% of children said the time they and their class fellows spend on games has considerably reduced.

The number of juvenile internet users who spend time on short videos has grown notably, with the proportion rising from 40.5% in 2018 to 54.1% in 2022. The short video has become an important way for children to obtain information.

In addition, artificial intelligence has been widely noticed by minors, with more than 80% of them saying they have heard of AI technology.
