ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s caretaker federal health minister has taken a bold step towards promoting public health by implementing a ban on the use of sugary items in subordinate institutions under the Ministry of Health. This move is being hailed as crucial in the fight against communicable and non-communicable diseases linked to excessive sugar consumption.

The decision, characterized as revolutionary, reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the prevalence of health issues associated with sugary products and drinks. An official advisory issued by the Federal Ministry of Health directs subordinate institutions to stop the use of sweet products in official meetings or functions.

The rationale behind this directive is the well-documented link between sugary drinks and communicable and non-communicable diseases, as emphasized by the Minister of Health. By focusing on prevention, the caretaker health minister underscores the importance of creating a healthy environment to reduce the risk of diseases.

Pakistan Launches Program to Prevent Diabetes

In support of these efforts, the government has launched a comprehensive program valued at Rs6.8 billion aimed at preventing diabetes, according to Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan. Dr. Jan highlighted the ministry’s commitment to making significant reforms to improve the health sector within a short period of time.

Recognizing the impact of sugary drinks on people of all ages, especially children and youth, Dr. Jan emphasized the need to safeguard their health and well-being from the adverse effects of excessive sugar consumption.
