Pakistan Continues Nationwide Crackdown Against Illegal Currency Exchange

ISLAMABAD: A countrywide crackdown against elements involved in hundi and illegal currency exchange continued on Monday.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) spokesperson said that during the last four months, 267 raids were conducted against the elements involved in hawala and hundi and illegal currency exchange businesses.

In total, 269 cases were lodged and 327 accused were apprehended while a probe of 36 inquiries were also completed.

During the period, Peshawar zone registered 107 cases and arrested 116 accused, Kohat zone registered twenty-one cases and arrested twenty-one accused, Lahore zone registered twenty-five cases and arrested thirty-six accused, Gujranwala zone registered 39 cases and arrested 52 accused, Faisalabad zone registered nineteen cases and arrested twenty-nine accused, and Multan zone registered sixteen cases and arrested eighteen accused.

The Islamabad zone registered six cases and arrested seven accused, the Karachi zone registered sixteen cases while arresting twenty-seven accused, the Hyderabad zone registered seven cases and arrested ten accused, Balochistan zone registered thirteen cases and arrested eleven accused in the Hawala Hundi business.

A total of more than 62 crore 38 lac rupees worth of domestic and foreign currency was exported, according to the spokesman. He added that 28,9036 US dollars and other foreign currency worth more than 171.2 million rupees were included in the currency exported.

The exported currency included over 371.7 million Pakistani rupees.

Shops Sealed in Crackdown

A number of shops were also sealed during the countrywide raids. The law enforcement agencies’ assistance was also obtained for the arrest of the accused.
