Pakistan Gets First Transgender School

SARGODHA: A first transgender school has started functioning at the Government High School for Boys in the Sargodha district of Punjab.

Chief Executive Officer of Education Akhtar Abbas Baloch announced that eunuchs and transgender persons would be given a monthly stipend, free books and transport facilities.

He said that the school for transgender persons had been established on the directives of the Punjab government and that more than 25 transgender students have begun their studies.

He noted that the school’s teachers would also be from the transgender community, while two consultants were employed to assist the community in understanding their issues.

The CEO of education stated that the class would be held three days a week from Monday to Wednesday from 1:30 to 4:30 pm. Students who identify themselves as transgenders will receive a monthly stipend of Rs5,000, as well as Rs 5,000 for summer uniforms, Rs2,000 for winter uniforms, Rs5,000 for transportation and Rs2,000 for stationery and books.

He said that the government would also pay transgender instructors Rs30,000 per month. People from the transgender community praised the government’s initiative and said it would benefit their well-being.

Naya, a transgender representative, said that education and skill development would make transgender persons valuable citizens who could contribute to the nation’s development.
