Pakistan Govt’s Crackdown on Sugar Hoarding Yields Positive Results

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government’s firm stance against the smuggling of US dollars, sugar, fertilizer, and petroleum products is delivering promising results nationwide.

District administrations, in compliance with federal directives, have initiated actions against sugar hoarding, resulting in numerous arrests and significant sugar seizures.

Pothohar Assistant Commissioner Nahel Hafiz took action by sealing five shops and confiscating 100 kilograms of sugar in H-13, Golra Morr, and Jhangi Syedan areas of the federal capital. Shopkeepers were cautioned that further actions would be taken if they continued to sell sugar at inflated prices.

In Rawalpindi, authorities sealed 13 warehouses in Tayyaba Market, Ratta Amral, and confiscated 1,000 sacks of sugar, each weighing 50 kilograms. Additionally, five shops in Dal Garaan and Naswari Bazaar were sealed for sugar hoarding.

Crackdown Against Sugar Hoarding in Faisalabad

Faisalabad’s district administration launched an intensive campaign against sugar hoarding to ensure its availability in the market at government-mandated rates. Assistant Commissioner Sammundri Suleman Mansha conducted a surprise raid at a warehouse near Salooni Jhal, recovering over 300 bags of sugar and sealing the premises.

In accordance with government directives, the DI Khan district administration retrieved 311 tons of sugar bags from warehouses on Daraband Road and sealed them pending further orders. Additionally, 650 bags of hoarded sugar were confiscated from the Maryali superstore during another operation.

Previously, the district administration and the food department had seized 2,190 bags of sugar within the Gomal University Police station’s jurisdiction.
