LAHORE: Punjab’s Caretaker Minister for Health Dr Jamal Nasir on Thursday urged the public to stay vigilant while maintaining a healthy diet and using face masks as ‘pneumonia cases’ were continuously rising due to smog.

Talking to a private news channel, he emphasized the susceptibility of individuals with weak immunity due to chronic cardiac, liver and kidney diseases or diabetes who could easily contract respiratory disease in cold weather.

Health experts warned of an increase in pneumonia cases among the elderly and children, and recommended measures such as sufficient rest, warm beverages, steam baths, or the use of humidifiers at home for air moisture. Timely consultations with doctors were also advised.

Dr. Nasir asked the citizens to consult with doctors without any delay and said that the surge in cases was due to undiagnosed influenza and pneumonia, urging citizens to promptly seek medical attention for respiratory issues.

Confirming a higher number of pneumonia cases compared to the previous year, he underscored the importance of precautionary measures to protect young children from the harsh cold weather prevailing in the province. Responding to questions, he informed that the Punjab government was taking action against vehicles emitting smoke and addressing environmental pollution from factories, with district administrations closely monitoring industries and brick kilns.

Besides the school mask mandate, the public was encouraged to use masks to protect themselves amid the ongoing smog crisis. Dr Nasir emphasized the need for citizens to take precautions to safeguard their health in light of the prevailing environmental challenges.  —APP
