ISLAMABAD: A 600 megawatt (MW) solar power project will be set up in Punjab’s Muzaffargarh district to bolster the presence of clean energy in the national grid.

According to local media reports, the project will be executed under a Build, Own, Operate, and Transfer (BOOT) framework, spanning a duration of 25 years.

The National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) has already secured a vast expanse of land spanning 2,553 acres in Tehsil Chowk Sarwar Shaheed of District Muzaffargarh to accommodate the venture.

This endeavor comes in the wake of the government’s approval of a swift plan in September 2022, geared towards accelerating the development of large-scale solar projects through private sector investment. By reducing reliance on costly fuel-based power generation methods, this solar power endeavor aligns with the government’s agenda.

Part of a broader initiative to generate approximately 10,000MW of solar energy, this project aims to mitigate carbon emissions, mitigate foreign exchange exposure, and drive down overall electricity tariffs.

Furthermore, NTDC is actively procuring land for two additional solar power ventures in District Layyah (1200 MW) and District Jhang (600 MW). The integration of 2400 MW of solar power into the system via these projects will address energy demands while amplifying the contribution of solar energy within the predominantly thermal energy mix.
