Pakistan PM for Utilizing Loss & Damage Fund on Merit to Fight Climate Change

DUBAI: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Thursday stressed upon the need to utilize the Loss and Damage Fund on merit to cope with the issues of climate change.

He said the utilization of Fund should not be attached with the development funds and loans from multilateral financial organizations, but it should be additional and tangible.

The prime minister made the remarks during an interview with CNN on the sidelines of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP28, in UAE.

Pakistan focusing on renewable energy projects

He added that currently Pakistan’s is focusing on transformation of the coal-based power plants to renewable energy projects to contribute towards minimizing the climate change impacts in the region.

PM Kakar said this is the area which could attract interest of countries in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

He went on to say that the climate change has hit Pakistan very hard last year. The prime minister noted that Pakistan is not responsible for contributing to the climate disaster in which the country’s Sindh and Balochistan provinces faced historical devastation.

He said the wealthy nations should show responsibility by themselves in this regard.

The prime minister to a question said initially it is possible to operationalize Loss & Damage Fund under the World Bank and other multilateral entities.
