Pakistan Records $496.312m Seafood Exports in FY 2022-23

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Seafood exports during the financial year ended on 30 June 2023 increased by 15.18% as compared to the exports of the same period of last year.

During the period from July to June, nearly 214,376 metric tons of fish and fish preparations valued at 496.312 million dollars were exported in contrast to the exports of 166.362 metric tons worth 430.898 million tons of the corresponding period last year, according to the latest data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.

Meanwhile, the exports of meat and meat products also surged by 25.13% as more than 100,194 metric tons of meat and meat preparations worth 426.708 million dollars in contrast to the exports of 76,886 metric tons valued at 341.006 million dollars of the corresponding period last year.

Pakistan’s Imports

Pakistan’s food group imports during the period under review fell by 0.88% as compared to the imports of the same period of last year. During the period from July to June 2022-23, Pakistan spent 8.936 billion dollars on the import of different food items as compared to the imports of 9.016 billion dollars in the corresponding period last year in order to fulfill the local needs.

During the period under review, the imports of milk for infants, cream, and milk into Pakistan fell by 11% as it came down from 144.300 million dollars to 162.140 million dollars, whereas the dry fruits and nuts imports dropped by 38.75% as it was recorded at 39.964 million dollars as against the imports of 65.272 million of corresponding period of last year.

The import of tea during the last financial year also dropped by 9.13% as it was recorded at 569.043 million dollars as against the imports of 626.185 million dollars of the corresponding period last year.

Meanwhile, the imports of spices slashed by 30.04% it was recorded at 151.240 million dollars by the end of the financial year 2022-23, in contrast to the imports of 216.183 million dollars in the corresponding period of last year.

However, the imports of food commodities, including wheat, rose by 34.85% as wheat valuing 1.072 billion dollars imported to tackle the local needs as against the imports of 795.286 million dollars in the corresponding period last year.

Pakistan’s Soya Bean Oil Imports

Meanwhile, soya bean oil imports into Pakistan also rose by 60.05% during the last financial year as soya bean valuing 315.540 million dollars were imported to fulfill local edible oil and vegetable ghee needs as compared to the imports of 197.154 million dollars of the same period last year.

During the last financial year, the exports of food products from Pakistan dropped by 7.25% as it was recorded at 5.0222 billion dollars as against the exports of 5.415 billion dollars of the same period of last year.
