UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan has reaffirmed its support for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in establishing a facility with broader and people-centric criteria to enhance efforts aimed at defeating hunger, improving nutrition, and bolstering food security in developing countries.
Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan, conveyed this commitment during the just-concluded UN Economic and Social (ECOSOC) Youth Forum, which convened over 1,000 youth leaders and activists from around the globe.
Highlighting Pakistan’s potential in the agriculture sector, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized the country’s capability to play a pivotal role in developing global food supply chains.
In alignment with the UN Secretary-General’s call for urgent reform of the global financial system, particularly regarding debt relief for distressed citizens in developing nations, Ambassador Jadoon underscored the critical importance of these efforts for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2) to eradicate world hunger.
Acknowledging the convergence of crises—from conflicts to climate change and supply chain disruptions—Ambassador Jadoon emphasized the urgent need for resilient and sustainable food systems capable of withstanding shocks and disruptions.
Pakistan, as the fifth most populous country with a significant youthful demographic, recognizes the imperative of safeguarding food systems for future generations. Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Pakistan’s economy, contributing substantially to its GDP and employing a significant portion of the labor force.
Ambassador Jadoon referenced Pakistan’s experience during the devastating 2022 floods, which destroyed 4.4 million acres of standing crops, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to climate-related challenges.
Despite its agricultural potential, Pakistan faces challenges stemming from cascading crises, including soaring food prices in the international market.
Advocating for international assistance that addresses immediate emergencies while prioritizing long-term sustainability and resilience of food systems, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to ensure food security, particularly for youth—the leaders of tomorrow.
As a nation committed to the well-being of its people and the global community, Pakistan calls for collective action to build resilient food systems capable of meeting the challenges of today and tomorrow.
