Pakistan: Terrorist Attack on Adiala Jail Thwarted

RAWALPINDI: Police said that the Cou­nter Terrorism Depart­ment (CTD) and the police have foiled an attempt to attack Central Jail Adiala, arresting 3 terrorists on Thursday night, local media reported.

Police said that a joint operation was conducted to foil the terrorist attempt in the city. Police officials said that they have recovered heavy weapons and ammunition from the arrested terrorists, who have since been shifted to unknown locations.

In a statement, a spokesman for the Rawalpindi police said that the police and CTD foiled an attempt to attack Central Jail Adiala and apprehended three terrorists who belonged to Afghanistan.

The CPO Rawalpindi said that that automatic heavy weapons and ammunition have also been recovered from the terrorists. He added that the automatic weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), hand grenades, and maps of the jail were also recovered from the terrorists.

CPO Syed Khalid Hamdani maintained that police and other law enforcement agencies, are conducting a search operation in the jail.

Currently, central Jail Adiala is overloaded, housing prisoners twice its capacity. Pakistan’s former prime minister and PTI founder, Shah Mehmood Qureshi and former CM Punjab Pervez Elahi, are also currently imprisoned in the jail.
