BEIJING, China: The Pakistan National Pavilion in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan province in southwest China, recently unveiled a batch of heat-treated Pakistani beef in a bid to promote Pakistani beef products in the region. Weighing 500 kilograms, the showcased beef served as samples for wholesalers and distributors across the southwest provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. Liu Jun, CEO of Chengdu Xiyixi Trade Company, the operator of the Pakistani national pavilion, expressed optimism about the market response, noting a growing interest among distributors.

Despite the relatively small volume of Pakistani beef imports, which amounted to $514,252 in the first quarter of 2024 according to data from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC), the pavilion operator remains confident. Liu highlighted the positive feedback from wholesalers, citing a significant pre-order of two tons of Pakistani beef from a distributor after sampling a box of samples. This phase aims to gauge the market’s response to the quality and taste of Pakistani beef, with potential for scaled-up imports based on market demand.

Looking ahead, Liu outlined plans to collaborate directly with Pakistani suppliers to streamline the trade process. This involves inviting Pakistani beef suppliers to establish offices at the pavilion, facilitating direct interactions and enhancing trade efficiency. Pakistani heat-treated beef gained access to the Chinese market in June 2023, with the first batch of imports arriving in January 2024.

The Pakistani National Pavilion in Chengdu, inaugurated in 2023, serves as a platform to showcase agricultural and cultural products from Pakistan. It plays a crucial role in facilitating business interactions and promoting trade between Pakistan and China, particularly in the agricultural sector.
