Pakistan’s Army Chief, Centcom Chief Discuss Security Cooperation

WASHINGTON: General Michael Erik Kurilla, the US Central Command (Centcom) commander, held a video teleconference with Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir, and discussed the security cooperation between the United States and Pakistan and ways to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the countries.

A statement issued by the Centcom headquarters said General Kurilla spoke to Pakistan’s Chief General Asim Munir and congratulated him on assuming the command of Pakistan’s Army.

The statement added that both the generals had a previously established relationship from General Erik Kurilla’s time as Centcom Chief of Staff.

General Asim Munir Took Command from General Qamar Javed Bajwa

COAS General Asim Munir assumed Pakistan’s Army command from General Qamar Javed Bajwa on November 29.

With the change of command, General Syed Asim Munir became Pakistan Army’s 17th chief.

General Asim Munir- who headed both the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Military Intelligence (MI) – belong to the Mangla Officers Training School program of the Pakistani force and became a commissioned military officer in the Frontier Force Regiment of Pakistan armed force.

General Asim Munir was appointed the Director-General of Pakistan’s Military Intelligence in 2017. He has also commanded the Northern Areas Force as a brigadier.

In 2018, Asim Munir was appointed as DG ISI, Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed succeeded him.
