Pakistan’s Cabinet Urges Provinces to Increase Wheat Procurement Targets

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s cabinet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair on Wednesday decided to write a letter to the four provinces to increase their wheat procurement targets and establish fair prices for the commodity.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar briefed the media, stating that the Ministry of National Food Security would write a letter to the provinces today.

Tarar expressed confidence that this decision would benefit farmers, considering the country’s ample wheat stocks and an expected bumper crop. He emphasized the positive impact on the rural economy.

Additionally, the cabinet discussed the recent visit of a Saudi delegation to Pakistan and their interest in investing in various sectors.

Tarar described the visit as highly productive, indicating progress in ongoing discussions. He announced a forthcoming high-level Saudi delegation visit and a private sector delegation’s visit to Pakistan, highlighting their potential positive contributions to the economy.

Tarar mentioned expected visits from other friendly countries and cited international recognition of government efforts for economic improvement, stressing its benefits for the common citizen. He said that the economy is on a positive track, with plans to further advance progress and development.

Regarding the political landscape, Tarar dismissed the recent gathering of opposition parties in Balochistan as unsuccessful. He highlighted internal divisions within the PTI and the legal challenges facing its leader.

Separately, the Federal Cabinet approved the establishment of the Institute of Modern Sciences in Wah Cantonment. The Prime Minister directed the formation of a committee to enhance procedures for establishing new universities and higher education institutions.

Furthermore, the cabinet approved the Federal Public-Private Policy of Pakistan for 2023-2028, aiming to accelerate economic growth through public-private partnerships. All ministries were instructed to submit proposals under this policy.

Additionally, the Cabinet approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Qatar’s Ministry of Labour and Pakistan’s Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development concerning labor relations, inspections, professional safety, and health. It was noted that currently, 300,000 Pakistanis work in Qatar, contributing 850 million rupees in foreign exchange to Pakistan.
