ISLAMABAD: With the onset of winter, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) of the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Pakistan has issued a timely advisory on the prevention and control of seasonal influenza. The NIH statement highlights that flu cases typically surge in the country from December to February, corresponding to the drop in temperatures during the winter season.

The objective of this advisory is to alert and assist health authorities and other stakeholders in implementing timely preventive and control measures. The CDC emphasizes the importance of preparedness to handle the anticipated increase in patient load in both outpatient and inpatient departments during the upcoming months.

The advisory underscores that while seasonal influenza viruses may initially present with mild symptoms, they can progress to severe illness, especially in individuals at high risk. Those with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cardiac and lung diseases, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and children under five years old are at a higher risk of developing severe or complicated diseases.

Health Advisory on Seasonal Influenza in Pakistan

Vaccination remains the most effective method for preventing infection and severe outcomes caused by influenza viruses, especially among high-risk groups. The advisory stresses the significance of immunization, particularly for those vulnerable populations.

Influenza is highly contagious and can spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing, or by contaminating hands and surfaces. The advisory recommends several preventive measures, including frequent and thorough hand washing with soap and water, and the use of hand sanitizer when access to hand washing facilities is limited. Additionally, individuals are urged to cover their mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing to prevent the spread of the virus.

The advisory further advises that individuals who are sick or have been in close contact with those displaying flu-like symptoms should take necessary precautions to limit the transmission of influenza. This includes staying home, resting, avoiding crowded places, and practicing social distancing measures.
