BEIJING: Pakistani cherries are set to make their first-ever entrance into the Chinese market, marking a major step in the international expansion of the cherry industry.

A Kashgar-based Pakistani logistics trader Doulart Karim said that cherries in the Pakistani market are too cheap, and the decision could largely benefit the traders linked with the cherry business.

He said that the cherries to be exported would come from Gilgit-Balochistan (GB), a major producer of cherry fruit in Pakistan.

Organic cherries

He noted that despite enough presence of local cherry varieties in China, Pakistani cherry fruit would still be able to occupy a place in the Chinese market, especially due to their organic nature.

Karim said that Pakistani cherries had already been tested in a laboratory in Islamabad, and the results proved it totally organic.

He added that the primary market for Pakistani cherry fruit would be Xinjiang province in China due to the proximity and ease of access. Then it would be gradually expanded to other areas in the country.
