Pakistan’s FM to Attend NAM, Third South Summits in Uganda: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani is scheduled to visit Kampala, Uganda from January 16 to 22 to attend in the 19th Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Third South Summit, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said on Tuesday.

In a press release, the country’s Foreign Office said that the NAM Summit is being held from January 17-20, 2024 and the Third South Summit from January 21 to 22.  The statement added that the two summits afford an opportunity for the members to reflect on and amplify same positions on a range of international, political, regional, and socioeconomic matters.

As a longtime member, Pakistan has also contributed to and shaped the agenda of NAM and is strongly devoted to further strengthening NAM’s role in responding to global and regional challenges relating to questions of security and peace.

The FO statement maintained that Islamabad has remained an active member of the G 77 and China and attaches high priority to cooperation among the Global South, including in sustainable development, climate change and poverty eradication.

At the NAM Summit, Jilani will share Islamabad’s perspective on endemic and contemporary international challenges linked to global peace, development and security.

Pakistan’s top diplomat will underline the need for enhancing multilateralism and reinvigorating the NAM’s role in promoting the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter.

At the South Summit, the FM will present Islamabad’s vision on enhanced cooperation and solidarity among nations of the Global South to reply to common challenges and agree on an agenda for a prosperous and united South.

On the sidelines of the two main summits, the FM is also likely to hold bilateral talks and meetings with the heads of delegation of other participating nations.
