ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said on Tuesday that Pakistan was a sovereign country and would take decisions in the nation’s best interests.

Ishaq Dar was addressing a press conference in Islamabad regarding his recently concluded visits to Saudi Arabia and Gambia, where he attended the World Economic Forum and the 15th OIC summit respectively.

Responding to a question regarding the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, Dar reiterated the government’s dedication to fulfilling international obligations but said that decisions would be made in the national interests.
Dar hailed the recent visit of the Iranian President as highly productive and confirmed the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman’s visit expected this month.

Addressing regional stability, Dar expressed Pakistan’s desire for amicable relations with neighboring Afghanistan while condemning terrorism, particularly recent incidents originating from Afghan soil, including attacks on Chinese nationals.
Responding to queries about social media restrictions, Dar underscored constitutional provisions for freedom of expression, tempered by legal boundaries to prevent baseless defamation against national interests and institutions. He noted the need for responsible expression, particularly in sensitive matters.

Reflecting on recent international engagements, Dar highlighted Pakistan’s active role in the World Economic Forum and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Summit. At the OIC Summit, Pakistan garnered support for condemning Israeli actions in Gaza and emphasized the urgent need to address Islamophobia globally.

Dar emphasized the significance of economic diplomacy, particularly in Africa, noting ample opportunities for Pakistani exporters. He clarified aspects related to interactions with the US ambassador and dispelled misconceptions regarding his involvement in wheat imports and the functioning of the Track and Trace System during the previous government’s tenure.
