Pakistan’s Former Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Arrested in May 9 Riots Case

RAWALPINDI: Awami Muslim League (AML) chief and former interior minister, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad, was arrested from the premises of a local court after his bail was rejected in a case related to the May 9 riots.

Sheikh Rasheed appeared before the court to seek an extension of interim bail in various cases. The court granted an extension in 11 cases but denied it in a case filed at New Town Police Station, leading to his arrest by the Rawalpindi Police.

Earlier, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed had condemned the incidents of May 9 following his appearance on a TV show. In his interview, he stated that he had advised the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, Imran Khan, to maintain positive relations with the army.

During the interview, Sheikh Rasheed mentioned that he was out of the country at the time of the May 9 riots. Despite being abroad during the events of May 9 and 10, Sheikh Rasheed condemned the incidents. He said that politicians should avoid criticizing institutions.
