Pakistan’s Minister Terms Electricity Theft ‘Economic Terrorism’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has said that government would leave no stone unturned to combat Electricity Theft adding that the practice was not less than an ‘Economic Terrorism’.

During a video conference with the Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Power Distribution Companies (Discos), the minister urged immediate action against electricity theft terming it economic terrorism and emphasized the need for innovative measures to eradicate this practice.

Awais Leghari stressed upon the urgent need to address electricity theft, citing its detrimental effects on the national economy. He encouraged the relevant officials of Discos to leverage technology and innovation in their efforts to eradicate power theft adding that the objective was to curtail indiscriminate power outages, especially to consumers who diligently pay their bills.

He declared that all obstacles hindering efforts to prevent electricity theft must be tackled immediately. He warned employees and officers to face action if being involved in any illegal activities.

The minister instructed all Discos to establish modern customer service centers nationwide and appoint competent officers to resolve customer complaints promptly. He also stressed the importance of treating consumers with kindness and warned against mistreatment, particularly regarding new electricity connections, emphasizing the policy of “the customer is always right.”

Additionally, Leghari warned employees and officers of disciplinary action if found involved in any illegal activities hindering efforts to prevent electricity theft.
