Pakistan’s PM and Bill Gates Discuss Progress on Polio Eradication Efforts

DUBAI: Pakistan’s Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Saturday met with Bill Gates, co-Chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), on the sidelines of COP28 to discuss the ongoing progress in Pakistan’s polio eradication efforts.

Prime Minister Kakar provided an update on the current polio vaccination drive in the country, emphasizing Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to eliminating the poliovirus.

During the meeting, PM Kakar highlighted the government’s dedication to extending vaccine outreach to children nationwide. The discussion also touched upon the collaboration between BMGF and Pakistan in areas such as financial inclusion, poverty alleviation, and malnutrition.

The caretaker prime minister acknowledged the support received from the Gates Foundation and encouraged further cooperation in enhancing national capacities in STEM education, strengthening disaster management operations, and digitizing agricultural value chains.

Polio Eradication Campaign in Pakistan

Meanwhile, Caretaker Minister for Health Dr. Nadeem Jan affirmed that urgent measures are being taken to eradicate polio. The latest polio drive saw the administration of polio drops to at least 21.6 million children, marking significant progress in the ongoing year’s efforts.
