RIYADH: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that achieving lasting peace in Gaza was imperative for global peace.

He was addressing the Meeting for Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh.

Highlighting the ripple effects of global conflicts, Prime Minister Sharif underscored how the Ukraine crisis had precipitated a surge in commodity prices worldwide.

This, he noted, had exacerbated Pakistan’s challenges in importing essential raw materials crucial for both industry and agriculture.

Furthermore, he lamented the compounding impact of inflation on developing nations, citing Pakistan’s own struggles exacerbated by the devastating floods of 2022.

“Pakistan is one of those countries which have nothing to do with the reasons leading to climate change. Our contribution to emissions is not even a fraction of one percent,” said the premier.

Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s dedication to elevating Pakistan’s standing in the international community through diligent efforts.

Addressing the economic challenges facing Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged the crises in the power and revenue sectors. He noted the implementation of comprehensive structural reforms across various sectors to steer the economy towards stability.

Shehbaz extended gratitude to the leadership of Saudi Arabia, Britain, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States for their continued support of Pakistan’s economy.

On the issue of climate change, the PM underscored Pakistan’s minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions while facing significant vulnerabilities. He cited the substantial economic losses incurred due to severe floods in 2022.

Expressing gratitude to friendly countries for their assistance during challenging times, the premier also highlighted the prevailing situation in Palestine, emphasizing the importance of permanent peace in Gaza for global stability.
