Pakistan’s Weekly Inflation Falls by 0.07%

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which measures weekly inflation, showed a nominal decline of 0.07 percent for the total consumption group during the week ending on July 20, according to data released on Friday by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

In the group mentioned above, according to PBS statistics, the SPI for the week under review was 258.45 points as opposed to 258.63 points for the previous week. The SPI for the total consumption group increased by 29.16% in the reviewed week compared to the similar week the previous year.

For all expenditure groups, the weekly SPI, with the base year 2015–16 =100, covers 51 necessary products across 17 urban centers. The SPI for the lowest consumption category, up to Rs 17,732, rose by 0.51 percent from 265.88 points last week to 267.24 points this week.

The SPI for consumption groups from Rs Rs 29,518-44,175, 22,889-29,517, and 17,732-22,888, however, increased by 0.03 percent, 0.20 percent, and 0.35 percent, respectively, while it felled by 0.28 percent for consumption group above Rs 44,175.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 09 (17.65%) items decreased, 30 (58.82%) items increased, and 12 (23.53%) things remained unchanged.

The items, which recorded a fall in their average prices on a week-on-week (WoW), included vegetable ghee 1 kg (0.49%), vegetable ghee 2.5 kg onions (10.29%), wheat flour (0.98%),(0.39%), chicken (8.57%), bananas (8.34%),  cooking oil 5 liter (0.30%), diesel (2.64%), and petrol (3.40%).

The items that saw an increase in their average prices on a week-on-week (wow) basis included garlic (2.31%), tomatoes (36.06 per cent), sugar (4.77 per cent), eggs (4.70 per cent), chilies powder (20.17 per cent), gur (3.66 per cent), and shirting (2.64 per cent).

The commodities that recorded a decrease in price on a Year-on-Year (YOY) basis included vegetable ghee 1 kg (0.51 per cent), onions (35.27 per cent), pulse masoor (8.08 per cent), electricity for q1 (14.58v), and LPG (1.06 per cent).

Inflation on YoY basis

On a Year-on-Year (YoY) basis, the products which witnessed an increase in their average prices included rice basmati broken (79.37 per cent), rice irri-6/9 (74.14 per cent), wheat flour (126.82 per cent), cigarettes (110.75 per cent), gas charges for q1 (108.38 per cent), tea packet (98.99 per cent),  gents sponge chappal (58.05 per cent), tomatoes (57.58 per cent), gur (54.21 per cent), sugar (66.18 per cent), potatoes (60.32 per cent), salt powdered (53.83 per cent), and bread (46.93 per cent).
