RAMALLAH: A Palestinian detained in an Israeli jail died on Friday due to “medical negligence,” said the Palestinian Prisoners Society.

The NGO said in a statement that Ahmad Abu Ali, 48, from the occupied West Bank, died in the Soroka hospital in Israel.

The statement said that Abu Ali’s health deteriorated at night, and he was transferred to the hospital but was later announced dead.

Abu Ali, who belonged to Yatta town, southern Hebron city, was serving a 12-year sentence, it added.

Abu Ali suffered multiple medical issues

It also said that Abu Ali was a patient with several chronic illnesses, including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity, and Israeli prison authorities deliberately delayed his medical treatment.

Abu Ali’s death brings the total deaths of Palestinians jailed in Israel since 1967 to 235, including 75 who died as a result of medical negligence, the statement said.

As of April 2022, Israel held some 4,450 Palestinians – including 160 children, 32 women, and 530 of those incarcerated without charge or trial, according to Al Jazeera.
