LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi said on Friday that he is a supporter of the Pakistan Army.

Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment produced Elahi before a Lahore court after his dramatic arrest in a case involving 70 million rupees in corruption in development funds allocated for the District Gujrat a day earlier.

Elahi while speaking to journalists ahead of the hearing, said, “I am innocent and a supporter of the Pakistan Army.”

In his message to supporters and party workers, the former CM Punjab urged them to stay strong.

It is to be noted that two cases have been lodged in Gujranwala and one in Lahore against Elahi on the charges of receiving kickbacks in awarding contracts.

On Thursday, a special anti-corruption court judge in Lahore issued non-bailable arrest warrants for Elahi, ordering police to produce him by 2 June. The first arrest warrant against him was issued on 25 May after the cancellation of his bail, while the second was issued on 26 May.

Parvez Elahi’s dramatic arrest

Elahi was arrested after a day-long drama, as an anti-corruption team had also reached his house for arrest, but failed to arrest him.

The Punjab Police and Elite Force had cordoned off the vicinity around the ex-CM Punjab’s residence, banning entry and exit points to the house.

In April, the ACE Gujranwala registered a case against Elahi, citing a report based on sources, in which he was accused of receiving a 2 billion rupees bribe for a development scheme contract.

In another case, an FIR was registered against him for taking a bribe of 120 million rupees from a Turkish company.
