Patras Bokhari Remembered on 65th Death Anniversary

LAHORE: The 65th death anniversary of eminent humorist, educationist, diplomat and writer Patras Bokhari observed across Pakistan on Tuesday.

Patras was born on October 1, 1898 in Peshawar, his real name was Syed Ahmed Shah.

He received his early education from Peshawar’s Mission High School and later moved to Government College, Lahore for graduation.

He also attended prestigious Cambridge Unviersty for higher education and studied English literature there.

He served as a professor of literature at the Government College, Lahore before becoming principal of the historic institution in 1946.

He also worked as Controller General of All India Radio in 1940. Pakistan government had sent Patras Bokhari to the United Nations as a permanent representative of the country in 1950.

He wrote remarkable essays such as Marhoom Ki Yaad Mein’, ‘Kuttay’, Lahore ka Jughrafiya’ and ‘Cinema ka Ishq’ which are still relevant even after six decades.

His collection of essays, ‘Patras Kay Mazameen’, was published in 1927. Critics term the collection as an asset in Urdu humour.

He passed away on Dec 5, 1958 in New York due to a cardiac attack.  The Pakistan government awarded him Hilal-e-Imtiaz in recognition of his services to education, diplomacy and writing.

He was also given the titles of ‘diplomats’ diplomat’ and ‘Citizen of the world’ because of his contributions to the UN.
