VATICAN CITY: Pope Francis on Thursday called for global leaders to embrace a comprehensive treaty regulating the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI). The 86-year-old pontiff made this appeal in a six-page message released ahead of the Catholic Church’s World Day of Peace on January 1, which this year focuses on the theme of AI.

While expressing appreciation for scientific and technological advancements that alleviate human suffering, Pope Francis cautioned against discoveries that grant humans extensive options, some of which may pose risks to survival and the well-being of the planet. He specifically pointed out the dangers of AI use, citing concerns such as disinformation, election interference, and decision-making processes where responsibility becomes ambiguous, such as social security payments or targeting weapons.

In his message, Pope Francis warned against the potential development of a “technological dictatorship” in the pursuit of absolute freedom. He emphasized the need for a binding international treaty to govern the development and application of AI, with the aim of preventing harm and promoting responsible practices.

Pope Francis stressed that those designing algorithms and digital technologies cannot be assumed to act ethically and responsibly, underscoring the necessity of global regulations. He argued that technological progress should improve the quality of life for all of humanity, addressing concerns about AI exacerbating inequalities and conflicts.

The Pope’s call comes amid increasing global attention to AI regulations. The European Union is working on comprehensive legislation for the sector, while China implemented specific regulations for generative AI in August. In October, US President Joe Biden issued an executive order focused on AI safety standards.

Pope Francis has previously been the subject of AI-generated images, including one viral image portraying him wearing a large white puffer coat adorned with a prominent crucifix.
