VENICE, Italy: Pope Francis embarked on a significant journey to Venice, marking his first trip outside Rome in seven months. His visit included a poignant stop at a women’s prison on the island of Giudecca, where he interacted with inmates and emphasized the importance of rehabilitation and reintegration.

Arriving by helicopter, Pope Francis greeted approximately 80 inmates, staff, and volunteers individually, expressing solidarity with those behind bars. Known for his advocacy for prisoners and marginalized communities, the pontiff encouraged the women to rebuild their lives with determination despite the challenges of incarceration.

During his visit, Pope Francis addressed the harsh realities of prison life, including overcrowding and violence, while emphasizing the potential for moral and material renewal within correctional facilities. He called upon the prison system to provide inmates with the necessary support for holistic growth, encompassing human, spiritual, cultural, and professional dimensions.

In addition to interacting with inmates, Pope Francis toured an art exhibition at the prison, showcasing the daily experiences of incarcerated individuals through the lens of various artists. The exhibit, representing the Vatican at the Biennale festival of art, offered a unique perspective on the lives of prisoners.

Following his visit to the prison, Pope Francis is scheduled to address young people at the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute before presiding over a mass on St Mark’s Square. Despite concerns about his health, the pontiff remains committed to his pastoral duties, with upcoming trips planned within Italy and a more extensive journey to Asia in September.

Pope Francis’s visit to Venice holds historical significance, as he becomes the fourth pope to visit the city, underscoring the close ties between the diocese of Venice and the papacy. His presence coincides with efforts to manage tourism pressure in Venice, with the implementation of entry fees for day-trippers.
