Poultry Prices Up by 30% in Rawalpindi, Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The prices of poultry items have gone up by 30 percent in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi during the last week, creating massive volatility in the market.

According to the market survey conducted by APP here on Monday, an increase of about 40 percent was witnessed in the price of chicken during the previous couple of months, while the price of poultry eggs witnessed an increase of 30 percent.

Meanwhile, Chairman Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA), Chaudhry Ashraf, said the increase in the current prices of poultry is due to the issue of demand and supply.

He said that the increase in poultry business inputs and cost of doing business was observed throughout the country, due to which the market was in crisis.

Chicken Prices Across Country

He further said that many people related to business of chicken in the country were affected by the ongoing crisis, and particularly, small businesses and poultry farms were shut down, adding the poultry business in the four provinces, including Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan is suffering from the current economic quagmire.

Chairman PPA said that the country’s economic conditions were also an important issue, and the poultry feed ingredients imported from foreign countries are very expensive, among which soybean was important.

He further said that many soybean ships have been stopped at Karachi port, which has an inevitable impact on the prices in the poultry market.

Poultry prices in Rawalpindi and Islamabad

According to the survey, the price of live chicken in the twin cities was reported to be between Rs415 and 420 per kg from the last three days of this month of February.

Meanwhile, chicken meat is available in the market at Rs690 to Rs700 per kg in the twin cities.

It was also found that poultry eggs were sold at Rs282 to Rs290 per dozen in the market of the twin cities. However, on Monday, it was available at Rs260 per dozen in the wholesale market while, at retail, eggs were available at Rs280 to Rs290 per dozen.

Association Demands

Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) has also demanded a further increase in chicken prices, despite its prices having already been going up in the twin cities.

Commenting on the issue, poultry feed industrialist and Senior Vice President of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hamza Sarosh remarked that soybean is included in the essential ingredients of poultry feed.

He further said that at present, the import of soybeans has stopped, and a number of ships of soybeans have been stopped at Karachi port, and only one ship has been released yet.

Hamza added that soybeans for poultry feed were imported from America, Brazil, and Argentina.

Meanwhile, customers are worried about the increasing prices of chicken and eggs and say that the prices have already been beyond their reach and that the poultry association should bring the price down instead of further increasing it.
