ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) have decided to support each other in the Senate by-election. The by-election on six vacant Senate seats will be held on Thursday.

Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, a leader of JUI, stated, “The PPP will back the JUI in the Senate elections in Balochistan, and in turn, the JUI will support Yousaf Raza Gillani.”

“We are not aiming for a role in forming the government, but we intend to contribute in the Parliament,” Haideri told media in a joined press conference.

Yousaf Raza Gillani expressed, “We have extensively discussed this matter with Maulana Sahib and warmly welcome his cooperation.”

“We are mutually supporting each other for the parliamentary proceedings and will collaborate effectively in the house,” Gillani added. The PPP leader Nayyar Bukhari confirmed their support for the JUI-F candidate in the Senate by-election in Balochistan.

It’s noteworthy that Gillani and Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Ilyas Meharban are set to contest the Senate by-election for the vacant seat from Islamabad.

Polling will take place at the upper house of parliament, as well as in Sindh and Balochistan assemblies in Karachi and Quetta from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

These vacant seats include one in the federal capital, two in Sindh, and three in Balochistan, as senators vacated their positions after securing seats in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies of Sindh and Balochistan.

Earlier, the PPP decided to nominate Yousaf Raza Gillani for the Senate chairman’s position, prompting him to resign from his National Assembly seat in Multan.
