Preparatory Meeting for 15th Islamic Summit Kicks Off in Gambia

BANJUL, Gambia: The preparatory meeting of the Senior Officials for the 15th Session of the Islamic Summit Conference has started in Banjul, Gambia, an OIC statement said on Thursday.

The Islamic Summit Conference will be held on the 4th and 5th of May 2024 in the capital of Gambia.

The preparatory meeting is aimed at discussing documents of the sessions and submitting its final report to the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers which will also submit a report to the Islamic Summit.

At the beginning of the session, Dr. Abdalla Altayer, Advisor at Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Multilateral Agency for International Affairs delivered a speech as the Chairman of the Islamic Summit Conference in its 14th Session.

He presented valuable efforts and programs carried out by the Kingdom during its chairmanship of the previous session, expressing its support for the efforts of the OIC’s General Secretariat.

Permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Lang Yabou, welcomed the delegates on the occasion, affirming that his country is exerting concerted efforts towards ensuring the success of the session under the theme “Enhancing Unity and Solidarity through Dialogue for Sustainable Development”.

The OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Yousef AlDobeay also delivered a speech in which he presented his felicitation to Gambia as it became the Chairman of this session.

He also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to Saudi Arabia for its valuable and appreciable efforts and initiatives during its chairmanship of the 14th Islamic Summit.

He also commended the Kingdom’s continued support to the Organization as the Headquarters State through its generous care and desire of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The Assistant Secretary-General said this summit is being held during a critical time and witnesses very important developments listed on the agenda of the OIC’s activities, foremost among them is the Palestinian Cause.

The Organization will be discussing peace and security, Muslim minority communities in non-member States, humanitarian, cultural, economic, social, science and technology, information, administrative, and financial matters.

The Banjul Summit provides a unique opportunity for the Member States to enhance their cooperation in order to promote joint Islamic action and hold a constructive dialogue on international issues and challenges faced by the Islamic Ummah.
