TASHKENT:  In response to the growing population and increased urbanization in Tashkent, Uzbekistan’s capital city, the government has embarked on a groundbreaking urban development project – creating the city of New Tashkent. With nearly 5 million people currently residing and working in Tashkent, the strain on existing infrastructure and the demand for new housing, schools, kindergartens, and clinics have surged.

Recognizing the need for forward-thinking planning, Uzbekistan’s Head of State has tasked authorities with devising a 15-20-year development plan for Tashkent. This visionary approach aims to alleviate the burden on the capital’s infrastructure while accommodating future population growth.

In July of this year, a Presidential Resolution was passed outlining measures for the construction of New Tashkent. A Coordinating Council, led by the Prime Minister, and a dedicated directorate were established to oversee the project. A Deputy Minister of Construction, Housing, and Communal Services was appointed to spearhead the initiative.

New Tashkent City Plan

The project covers an area of 19,720 hectares in the Yuqorichirchiq and Urtachirchiq districts of Tashkent region. The initial phase, consisting of 2,500 hectares, is set to accommodate 100,000 residents. The Directorate has engaged leading foreign companies to ensure the project’s success. Comprehensive master plans, industry strategies, and targeted programs are being formulated, drawing inspiration from successful practices in developed nations.

Environmental sustainability, comfort, energy efficiency, and harmonious urban planning are at the core of the New Tashkent concept. The city is envisioned as a “smart” and “garden city” with an administrative center, educational institutions, business districts, and cultural hubs. Sprawling parks, artificial canals, and lakes will enhance the city’s aesthetics, and a focus on green spaces aligns with the Tashkent Green Belt initiative.

Twenty prestigious international companies from countries such as Singapore, the UK, China, Germany, Turkey, the Netherlands, South Korea, and the UAE are contributing their expertise to various components of the project.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev stressed the importance of aligning local standards and regulations with international best practices to ensure the success of this landmark project. He emphasized that New Tashkent should serve future generations, requiring meticulous planning and construction.

The President instructed authorities to finalize detailed designs by year-end, select designers, and designate construction organizations for the initial phase. He underscored the need for continuous refinement to ensure that the city fulfills its role as a guide for future urban development. Additionally, the importance of training specialists to manage and maintain the city’s infrastructure was emphasized.
