ISLAMABAD: Import restrictions in Pakistan due to the ongoing economic meltdown have badly affected the car industry as many automakers are observing intermittent shutdowns in production, which has decreased their sales volume.

Proton is among those severely affected as the company’s bookings have been on hold for the past several weeks. It has removed the vehicles’ prices from its website. This shows that the company is preparing to reopen the bookings at the new rates.

A representative of the Al-Haj Proton dealers in the capital city Islamabad, informed that the company would restart receiving bookings for its units soon at new rates.

Declining to provide the exact date, he said that the booking resumption would start in mid-to-late June.

Proton’s cars lineup

The automaker is still a strong contender among new manufacturers in the country due to its unique lineup, which consists of X70 A C-segment luxurious SUV that competes with Kia Sportage, Saga and Hyundai Tucson, an A-segment small-sedan that competes with Suzuki Cultus, Swift, and Kia Picanto.

Proton X70 currently started gaining popularity among Pakistani buyers but financial problems have dampened its progress.

It is still uncertain that Proton would be able to revive its sales rythem, especially after the impending rates hikes.
