LAHORE: The government of Punjab on Monday filed an appeal in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against a local court order that granted protective bail to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President and former Punjab chief minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi.

In the appeal against the single bench’s order to grant protective bail to Elahi, the anti-corruption division and others have been enlisted as parties. The bench’s verdict on the ex-Punjab CM’s case was said to have been contrary to the facts in the petition. According to the plea, Elahi is being investigated by relevant investigative agencies under the law, claiming that the single bench ignored the law in its ruling.

The provincial government has pleaded with the Lahore High Court (LHC) to declare the single bench’s ruling null and void and seek its immediate suspension.

In a case of alleged corruption involving non-merit appointments in the Punjab Assembly, a judge on an anti-corruption court last month granted post-arrest bail to Elahi. If he wasn’t needed in another case, the judge ruled that the former chief minister of Punjab should be freed. The judge also required Elahi to provide one-million-rupee surety bonds.

A judicial magistrate on June 4 in Lahore remanded Elahi in judicial custody for 14 days after being detained by the provincial Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) in a case about illegal recruitment and bribery. An additional session judge on June 12 allowed ACE his physical remand again.

However, the LHC suspended the physical remand of Parvez Elahi on June 13.
