DOHA, Qatar: In a statement released on Wednesday, Qatar urged the international community to intervene swiftly to prevent what it described as a potential “genocide” in Rafah, following Israel’s seizure of the Gaza city’s crossing with Egypt and threats of a broader assault.

The Gulf state, which has been actively mediating between Israel and the militant group Hamas, called for urgent action to avert an invasion of the city and the dire humanitarian consequences that could result.

The situation escalated after Israel’s military seized control of the main border crossing with Egypt, prompting concerns of an imminent ground incursion into Rafah.

Despite international objections, Israel has maintained its stance, citing security concerns. The recent attacks on the southern city, which is densely populated with displaced civilians, have raised alarm bells among global leaders and humanitarian organizations.

Qatar’s involvement in mediation efforts, along with Egypt and the United States, underscores the diplomatic push to broker a ceasefire and secure the release of hostages amidst the ongoing conflict. Qatar, hosting Hamas’s political office in Doha since 2012, has played a significant role in facilitating negotiations and fostering dialogue between the conflicting parties.

The appeal from Qatar for urgent international action underscores the gravity of the situation in Rafah and the need for immediate intervention to prevent further escalation and loss of life. As negotiations continue in Cairo, the international community faces mounting pressure to address the unfolding crisis and work towards a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
