Queen of Melody’s 23rd Death Anniversary on Saturday

LAHORE: The 23rd death anniversary of Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan is being observed on Saturday (today). The legendary singer was born on September 21, 1926 in Kasur.  She had started her musical career from Calcutta at the age of 9 as a singer child star. Noor Jehan inherited music as she was born in a family associated to music.

Malika-e-Tarrannum sang thousands of songs during her career. She started her film career in Pakistan as actress, and the first female film director with film ‘Chann Wey’ in 1951. Her last movie ‘Ghalib’ was released in 1961. Noor Jehan’s national patriotic songs, during 1965 Pak-India war, are a significant part of Pakistan’s national history.

Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan received many awards‚ including the highest Pakistani honour in entertainment sector‚ Tamgha-e-Imtiaz in 1966.  She passed away on December 23, 2000 in Karachi.
