ISLAMABAD: Daal Chawal is a popular and simple Pakistani dish made with lentils and rice. Savour the essence of tradition with the following Daal Chawal recipe.
Ingredients:
For Daal Preparation:
- 3 tbsp Oil
- 1 cup chopped Onion
- 1 tbsp chopped Garlic
- 2 tbsp sliced Green Chili
- 1 cup chopped Tomato
- 1 ½ tbsp Red Chilli Powder
- 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
- 1 tbsp Cumin Powder
- 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 1 tsp Salt
- 2 cups Red Lentil (soaked)
- 2 cups Yellow Lentil (soaked)
- 4-5 cups Water
- 1 tbsp Garam Masala Powder
For Tadka Preparation:
- 1/2 cup Oil
- 1 tbsp sliced Garlic Cloves
- 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
- 2-3 sliced Green Chilies
- 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds
- 8-10 Whole Red Chilies
- 1-2 Bay Leaves
- 1 tbsp Garam Masala Powder
For Rice Preparation:
- 5-6 cups Water
- 1 tbsp Salt
- 3 cups Basmati Rice (soaked)
Instructions:
- In a pot, heat oil and add chopped onions. Add garlic, green chillies, tomatoes, coriander powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for a minute.
- Add red lentils and yellow lentils, and mix well.
- Pour in water and cook for 2-3 minutes. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes.
- In a pan, heat oil and add garlic, mustard seeds, green chillies, cumin seeds, whole red chillies, and bay leaves. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Pour the tadka over the prepared daal. Spread garam masala powder and mix well. Set aside.
- In another pot, heat water, add salt, and mix well. Add soaked rice and cook until fully done.
- The Daal Chawal is ready. Serve and enjoy.
