Recipe of Traditional Daal Chawal

ISLAMABAD: Daal Chawal is a popular and simple Pakistani dish made with lentils and rice. Savour the essence of tradition with the following Daal Chawal recipe.

Ingredients:

For Daal Preparation:

  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1 cup chopped Onion
  • 1 tbsp chopped Garlic
  • 2 tbsp sliced Green Chili
  • 1 cup chopped Tomato
  • 1 ½ tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 tbsp Cumin Powder
  • 1 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 2 cups Red Lentil (soaked)
  • 2 cups Yellow Lentil (soaked)
  • 4-5 cups Water
  • 1 tbsp Garam Masala Powder

For Tadka Preparation:

  • 1/2 cup Oil
  • 1 tbsp sliced Garlic Cloves
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2-3 sliced Green Chilies
  • 1 tbsp Cumin Seeds
  • 8-10 Whole Red Chilies
  • 1-2 Bay Leaves
  • 1 tbsp Garam Masala Powder

For Rice Preparation:

  • 5-6 cups Water
  • 1 tbsp Salt
  • 3 cups Basmati Rice (soaked)

Instructions:

  1. In a pot, heat oil and add chopped onions. Add garlic, green chillies, tomatoes, coriander powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook for a minute.
  2. Add red lentils and yellow lentils, and mix well.
  3. Pour in water and cook for 2-3 minutes. Cover and cook for 15-20 minutes.
  4. In a pan, heat oil and add garlic, mustard seeds, green chillies, cumin seeds, whole red chillies, and bay leaves. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  5. Pour the tadka over the prepared daal. Spread garam masala powder and mix well. Set aside.
  6. In another pot, heat water, add salt, and mix well. Add soaked rice and cook until fully done.
  7. The Daal Chawal is ready. Serve and enjoy.
