LONDON: In a bid to combat traffic congestion and enhance safety on UK motorways, National Highways has introduced a cutting-edge solution: Spot, the robot dog. This innovative technology is being trialed across various locations in the south west, with the aim of revolutionizing the way surveys are conducted on roadways.

Spot, the white robotic machine, is poised to replace human inspectors in challenging and hard-to-reach areas, such as steep banks, culverts, and under bridges. By capturing information in these difficult locations, Spot aims to streamline journeys for all motorists, including commuters, by reducing delays caused by surveying activities.

According to National Highways, Spot offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional survey methods and helps minimize the need for disruptive traffic management measures. The use of this robotic tool not only enhances safety but also improves efficiency in survey work, ultimately benefiting road users.

Guy Swains, Engineering Manager at National Highways, expressed optimism about the initial testing phase of Spot, noting its potential to address challenges in surveying infrastructure. Live trials are currently underway, with Spot’s capabilities being tested across various terrains, environments, and weather conditions. The data gathered from these trials will be analyzed to assess safety enhancements and operational efficiencies.

Matt Ewing, Business Development Manager, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology to enhance safety and data collection processes. By utilizing Spot, National Highways aims to achieve significant improvements in surveying methodologies while realizing the full potential of this advanced technology.
