DUSHANBE, Tajikistan: Amid growing concerns over terrorist threats from Afghanistan, Russia and Tajikistan recently conducted a four-day joint military exercise along their border with Afghanistan, aimed at addressing potential security risks.
Reports from Tajikistani media indicate that the military exercise was conducted to preemptively counter any potential threats along the border, particularly focusing on tactics to combat terrorist groups that might infiltrate into Tajikistan.
The exercise involved the participation of Russian military equipment stationed at the 201st military base in Tajikistan, showcasing various combat strategies and counterterrorism tactics.
Neighboring countries of Afghanistan have voiced ongoing concerns about perceived terrorist threats originating from the region, prompting collaborative security measures such as joint military exercises.
Notably, this is not the first time Russia and Tajikistan have conducted such joint exercises. In the previous year, similar military maneuvers were held within 20 kilometers of the Afghan border, highlighting a continued effort to bolster regional security.
The 201st military base, situated in Tajikistan’s cities of Dushanbe and Bokhtar, serves as Russia’s largest military facility outside its borders. The decision to conduct joint exercises near Afghanistan underscores the shared apprehension about the escalating terrorism landscape in Afghanistan.
Despite the military activities, the Taliban, which holds significant influence in Afghanistan, has not issued any official response to these joint exercises.
