MOSCOW: Russia summoned the US Ambassador on Thursday, issuing a stern warning and threatening to expel American diplomats in protest against unwarranted American interference in Moscow’s internal affairs.

The Russian foreign ministry accused the United States of funding “anti-Russian” non-profit groups and disseminating disinformation surrounding both the upcoming Russian presidential elections and Moscow’s military operations in Ukraine. A statement from the ministry declared a firm stance against any attempts at meddling in Russian affairs, vowing to decisively suppress such actions.

The retaliatory measures threatened by Moscow include the potential expulsion of US embassy officials allegedly involved in the purported interference. This latest development adds to the long list of diplomatic disputes between Moscow and Washington, which have seen numerous expulsions of diplomats in recent years amid deteriorating relations.

Russia Demands End to US Funding for Three NGOs

During the meeting with US envoy Lynne Tracy, Russian officials demanded an end to American funding for three specific non-profit education groups: the American Councils for International Education, Cultural Vistas, and the Institute of International Education. Moscow accused these organizations of promoting values and attitudes deemed incompatible with Russian society.

The Russian government has long viewed Western-backed NGOs and civil society groups with suspicion, often portraying them as hostile entities aimed at undermining Kremlin authority. Several such organizations have been labeled “undesirable” by Russian authorities, prohibiting citizens from collaborating with them.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly accused the United States of meddling in Russia’s domestic affairs, with tensions further exacerbated by US revelations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The ongoing diplomatic standoff reflects the deep-seated hostilities between the two global powers, casting a shadow over prospects for improved relations.
