Russia To Give Over 2 Billion Rubles for Remediation of Uranium Tailings in Kyrgyzstan

SOCHI, RUSSIA: On the sidelines of the ATOMEXPO 2024 Forum in Sochi, Minister of Emergency Situations Boobek Ajikeyev met with Director General Alexey Likhachev of Rosatom State Corporation.

They deliberated on the Interstate Program titled “Reclamation of Territories Affected by Uranium Production in CIS Countries,” aimed at the ongoing liquidation of ecological and radiation damage caused by former uranium production sites in Kyrgyzstan from 2024 to 2030.

The Cabinet of Ministers and the Russian government inked a cooperation agreement for the rehabilitation of Kyrgyzstan’s uranium-producing regions.

The objective of the agreement is to safeguard the population residing in areas with uranium tailings and to mitigate emergency risks. Russia intends to allocate 2.141 billion rubles to Kyrgyzstan for the remediation of uranium tailings.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations stated that the agreement will contribute to the improvement of the ecological situation and the efficient utilization of territories, leading to the socio-economic development of settlements that were once sites of uranium production.

Additionally, it aims to further enhance and deepen the mutually beneficial cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Russia in the peaceful use of atomic energy.

Minister of Emergency Situations, Boobek Ajikeyev, was among three individuals honored for their professionalism and significant contributions to the development of peaceful applications of atomic energy at the ATOMEXPO 2024 Forum held in Sochi.
