KYIV, Ukraine: Ukraine reported on Monday that it successfully thwarted 55 Russian attacks in the eastern Donetsk region, following a recent admission of a deteriorating situation on the front line. The Ukrainian army revealed that these attacks targeted several villages north and west of Novobakhmutivka, including Ocheretyne, where heavy fighting occurred on Sunday.

The strategic village of Novobakhmutivka fell into Russian hands over the weekend, heightening tensions as Ukrainian forces anticipate the arrival of crucial US weapons. These recent developments mark an escalation in the conflict, with Moscow’s forces advancing deeper into the Donetsk region, particularly north of the captured hub of Adviivka.

In addition to repelling attacks in the north, Ukrainian forces continue to maintain defensive positions in settlements west of the Moscow-held city of Donetsk, such as Krasnogorivka. Despite Russian attempts, Ukraine asserted that its troops successfully defended against enemy advances, even amidst aerial support provided to the Russian forces.

Krasnogorivka, located west of Donetsk, has become increasingly vulnerable following the fall of nearby Marinka and Avdiivka. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky indicated that in response to the evolving situation, Ukrainian troops have adjusted defensive lines, retreating to new positions in some areas.

Kyiv has issued warnings of potential Russian offensives ahead of Russia’s patriotic May 9 holiday, highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness on the part of Ukrainian forces.
