RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman has sent a cable of congratulations to the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on his taking the constitutional oath, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.

The Crown Prince wished PM Shehbaz Sharif success, and the people of Pakistan steady progress and prosperity, SPA reported.

Pakistan’s newly elected National Assembly on Sunday elected Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif as prime minister for a second time.

Shehbaz Sharif, the candidate for his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and allied political parties, secured a comfortable win over Omar Ayub Khan of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) backed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Shehbaz, the joint candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the PPP, received 201 votes in the 336-member of the assembly. His contestant Omar Ayub Khan of SIC took 92 votes.

Earlier today, Shehbaz Sharif was sworn in as the 24th prime minister of Pakistan. Pakistan’s President Arif Alvi has administered an oath from Shehbaz Sharif. Army Chief General Asim Munir and outgoing caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, Chief Ministers and governors of all provinces also attended the ceremony.

Shehbaz Sharif earlier served as prime minister of a PDM-led government from April 2022 to August 2023 before the national assembly was dissolved to hold general polls in February.
